Female Rose-breasted Grosbeak Eating Safflower Seed

Grosbeaks are a member of the cardinal family. While they don’t look very similar, you may notice that they both have very large beaks. They have something else in common; They both LOVE safflower seed. Safflower Seed is a small highly nutritious seed. Its tough shell and bitter taste keep many birds and critters away. Squirrels won’t touch safflower! Grackles, Cowbirds, and Starlings will also keep their distance.

Safflower is highly desirable for Cardinals, Grosbeaks, House Finch, and More! This Female Rose-breasted Grosbeak was attracted to our feeder full of safflower during her migration north.
